Caring for Your New Yard

Care & Watering

Successful seed germination depends on a few days of special care. To assure proper germination water regularly. Keeping the yard moist will maximize seed germination. After watering the mulch mat should feel like a damp bath towel. You may walk on the hydroseeded surface when watering. Try to walk only on areas that are dry, and try to not disturb the mulch mat. It is very important to keep all animals away from the planted area. By watering regularly and keeping your new seedlings from drying out you insure the beginnings of a lawn that will make your neighbors green with envy.

Spring and Fall Watering Schedule: Temps Below 70 Deg.
Day        Frequency                     Amount
1-13       1 to 2 Times/Day        20 Minutes
13-24     1 Time/Day                  25 Minutes
24-44     2 Times/Week             30 Minutes
>44        1 Time/Week                35 Minutes

This is an average watering schedule based on typical lawn conditions. If you have very sandy soil (such as a winter mix top soil) double the frequency shown above and below. If it rains.... you're ok.
If you have an irrigation system, try and set it for the most cycles possible (say 6 to 8 waterings per day) at about 5 minutes per cycle during the germination period. Keeping the mulch mat moist provides the grass seeds optimal growing conditions.

Summer Watering Schedule: Temps Over 70 Deg.
Day          Frequency                   Amount
1-13         3 Times/Day              20 Minutes
13-24       1 Time/Day                25 Minutes
24-44       2 Times/Week           30 Minutes
>44           1 Time/Week             35 Minutes
Mowing

Mowing can begin once the new lawn is 3" tall in most areas. Mowing stimulates growth and increases thickness. Set the mower high at first, and then gradually lower. Try to cut no more than 1/3 of the grass at a time.

One general rule for mowing is that the shorter you want to mow the more often you need to mow to maintain healthy grass. Try to mow your lawn in different directions each time, as to not create ruts and grow patterns.

Fertilizing

The new grass will need a strong application of balanced fertilizer after the first mowing and again 30 days later. Apply fertilizer on the lawn area when it is dry and then water thoroughly. Use a standard balanced fertilizer available at almost any supply store. Using a balanced fertilizer for your first application will help to stimulate the second root growth. This helps to fight off diseases and keep the lawn healthy through the warm summer months. Examples include the following:

10-10-10,10-20-10,16-16-16

Apply at rates recommended on the bag. If no recommendation is on the fertilizer bag, usually about 50 lbs. on a 5,000 square foot average lawn will be suitable. And, be sure to water thoroughly immediately after applying the fertilizer.

The application of “weed and feed” for your first fertilizing is not recommended. This type of fertilizer can be hard on a new lawn. If broadleaf weeds are a concern Allstar Hydroseeding recommends treating the individual weeds with a product like “weed-b-gone”. We recommend waiting until the lawn is at least three months old before using “weed and feed”.
